Potassium cyanate (KCNO) is a white crystal, insoluble in cold water, slightly soluble in ethanol. At room temperature, potassium cyanate is relatively stable, but it easily decomposes under high temperature, light, or acidic conditions. It has a melting point of 315 °C, a boiling point of 700-900 °C (1000 hPa) and a density of 2.056 g/cm³.
Potassium cyanate is an inorganic compound that has a variety of uses, including:
1. Raw materials for organic synthesis: Potassium cyanate is used as a raw material for the synthesis of various compounds in organic chemistry.
2. Pharmaceutical industry: It is used in the manufacture of certain drugs such as hypnotics and anesthetics.
3. Herbicides and fungicides: In agriculture, potassium cyanate can be used as a herbicide and fungicide.
4. Electroplating industry: Potassium cyanate is also used in the electroplating industry as an electroplating agent for the surface treatment of metal parts.
