Yttrium Fluoride

Yttrium fluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula F₃Y. It is a white powder with a density of 4.01 g/mL, a melting point of 1152 °C, and a boiling point of 2230 °C. Yttrium fluoride is insoluble in water, but it is soluble in strong acids, such as perchloric acid. It is hygroscopic in the air but relatively stable. In addition, the reaction of yttrium fluoride with ammonium fluoride will produce NH₄F· YF₃ This insoluble double salt.

In industrial applications, yttrium fluoride is widely used in the manufacture of optical glass, ceramics and electronic devices. It can also be used as a catalyst and additive. In addition, yttrium fluoride is used in lighting sources to make arc lamp carbon electrodes, and is also a raw material for electrolysis to produce yttrium metal.
