Zirconium oxychloride is a chemical substance with the molecular formula ZrOCI₂·8H₂O, which is chemically stable and not easy to react with strong oxidants, water, moisture, and alkali metals. Zirconium oxychloride has a melting point of 400 °C and a density of 1.91 g/cm³. It is a white needle-like crystal that loses 6 crystals of water when heated to 150°C and all of it at 210°C. Zirconium oxychloride is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, ether, slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, and its aqueous solution is acidic.
Uses of Zirconium Oxychloride
1. Catalyst: used as a catalyst in organic synthesis to promote the progress of chemical reactions.
2. Ceramic dyes: as additives for ceramic and glass dyes, used to adjust the color of products.
3. Medical applications: Due to its high X-ray transparency, it also has applications in medical imaging.
4. Intermediate raw materials for deep processing: zirconium oxychloride is the main raw material for the production of other zirconium products such as zirconium dioxide, zirbia carbonate, zirconium sulfate, compound zirconia and zirconium hafnium separation to prepare metal zirconium hafnium.
5. A variety of additives: used as stabilizers, rubber additives, paint desiccants, refractories, ceramics, glaze and fiber treatment agents for oilfield formation soils.
